Dartmouth is home to the Royal Navy's officer training college , where all officers of the Royal Navy and many foreign naval officers are trained. The town contains many medieval and Elizabethan streetscapes and is a patchwork of narrow lanes and stone stairways. A significant number of the historic buildings are listed. One of the most obvious is the Butterwalk, built in 1635 its intricatley carved wooden fascia is supported on granite columns.
