The Him and Her Chair
The Panton chair has been around for a while now, but it still seems to be a priceless classic. Originally designed by Vernon Panton, one of the most influential architects of the 1960s and 70s, this chair has been a classic since it was first manufactured in 1963. One of the materials that Vernon was most interested in was plastic and that was the main influence for the Panton chair. The chair is multipurpose, it can be used as a café chair, restaurant chair or dining chair and not only that it has a fantastic design with a strong structure.
Serial production of the Panton chair began in 1967 and the one piece moulded plastic product was greatly received by the public and won numerous awards. One of the very first pieces is housed in the Museum of Modern however there is a designer who has taken this chair and put their own spin on it. The chairs that I am talking about are the Him and Her chairs.
Taking the design from the Panton cafe chair, Fabio Novembre used model castings to create his version of the dining chair. The chair features the behind of a male and female in the seated position and has had mixed reviews amongst customers. As a restaurant chair or dining chair, it would look very out of place in a traditional restaurant setting and next to a traditional café table or dining table. Nevertheless whether you think that they are tasteless and an insult to Vernon Panton or whether you like the idea of them, they are here to stay.
