Dining areas may be seen as having only one purpose; somewhere to eat lunch during a busy working day. However, dining areas can easily become the heartbeat of any workforce, giving members of staff an area to retreat after a hectic morning at work. Employees will not only see it as an area to eat their lunch, they will also see it as a place to congregate with colleagues, creating a social hub within the workplace. Furthermore, it allows people to arrange informal meetings that can potentially be more productive than a meeting in their office environment and a more welcoming setting to meet people from other sectors or even different companies.
Fashioning Space
Whether your chosen dining facility is large or small, staff need to feel as if they have plenty of room to relax and wind down. There is nothing more uncomfortable than trying to eat in a cramped space. It certainly does nothing to help with staff morale. Even the largest of dining rooms will benefit from a few tricks of the trade to create the illusion of more space, such as using solid colours.
Comfort
There is always a fine line in dining facilities between functionality and comfort. Furniture needs to be durable so that it lasts, however all furniture should also be comfortable. After all, what is the point of having a workplace refurbishment if your staff cannot feel comfortable in the very environment they go to relax or hold productive discussions? Striking a balance between function and comfort is paramount.
Use of technology
If the dining area is also used as a break-out area, portable technology such as iPads and other tablet devices can be placed firmly in elected areas to assist with informal meetings. Technology doesn’t only have to be incorporated into breakout areas. Wireless surface chargers are now becoming more and more popular within offices and dining areas. In this case, it will provide staff with a chance to charge their smartphone or tablet during their lunch hour.
These are just a few things to bear in mind if you’re about to undertake a dining area refurbishment or fit out.
